The Canadian band Front Line Assembly is considered one of the “historic” groups in industrial music. Born from an idea by Bill Leeb, who had been a member of the early “Skinny Puppy” (Formation of fundamental importance) they toned down the harshest experiments present on their debut in favor of a more polished sound, but no less ferocious.

It is fundamentally an alien-metropolitan concept that must be taken in one gulp.

Its goal was to disturb, with its morbid spirit and a touch of perversity that has always characterized the industrial scene, providing a sick portrait of a civilization overwhelmed by deformed mechanical monsters, reckless machines and devastating seismic shocks.

The idea was to compose music that evoked the futuristic visions of Kraftwerk, updated to the nascent era of cyberpunk. The result was a heavy work, with typically industrial rhythms—cacophonous and dissonant, rich in pneumatic drillings, brushed with ambient electronic effects in the distance.

Putting these technological pantomimes on stage was a heavily filtered voice, as fashion dictated—obsessive and oppressive, metallic and inexpressive.

It is fundamentally an alien-metropolitan concept that must be drunk in one gulp.

Following two demos, “Nerve War” and “Total Terror”, Front Line Assembly released their first album, “The Initial Command”, in 1987. Rhys Fulber joined the band. The album “State of Mind” (1988) was the first to be released worldwide.
In 1989, Michael Balch left Front Line Assembly and joined Ministry. The album “Gashed Senses and Crossfire” was released in 1989, and the track “Digital Tension Dementia” attracted the attention of many underground musicians, fans, and DJs. “Caustic Grip” was released in 1990 and became a classic among underground fans. In 1991, the single “Virus” (and its video) were credited and played in industrial clubs worldwide.

The next album, “Tactical Neural Implant” (1992) wich inspired the Arcane-tech’s— Marco Galassi—negative hero.

With it Front Line Assembly became one of the most popular bands in industrial music.

The following album, “Millennium” (1994).

Consisted of a combination of metal guitars, electronic music, and media sampling (much of which was taken from the Michael Douglas film “Falling Down”), which had become one of the hallmarks of industrial rock and industrial metal during the nineties.

“Hard Wired” (1995) and the world tour that followed marked the period of greatest success for Front Line Assembly.

An unstoppable race, from one millennium to the next, up to the masterpiece: Echogenetic.
